TOP AYURVEDIC TRAVEL TIPS!

If you travel regularly – the following innovative suggestions may prove very helpful.

For HIGH FLYERS (Plane travellers)

  • TIP 1: FAST!

It is suggested that NO FOOD is best on flights. This helps the body adjust the metabolism to a new time. Eating during the flight will create more bloating. Digestion is impaired at altitude due to lower pressure so the body can’t assimilate food. This can be a little more challenging when on long haul journeys. When travelling long distance it is suggested you eat fresh fruits (ideally one which are whole and not already cut up. Prepare yourself to rest.

  • TIP 2: drink Drink DRINK!

Take a small thermos and various herbal tea bags. Tulsi tea is the best as its known to stabilise all doshas especially vata which becomes unstable during travel. This keeps things nicely hydrated.

  • TIP 3:ABHYANGA BABY!

Abhyanga (self massage with sesame) before, during and after flying helps to ground the effects of severe vata aggravation. During flight- you can massage sesame oil in to the soles of your feet, then put a pair of socks on. I’ve NOT done this perosnally- but I hear it can help especially on flights over 10 hours.

SPECIFICALLY FOR JET LAG SUFFERERS:

  • TIP 1: MARVELLOUS MUNG BEANS!

Some people swear by this… Eat MUNG SOUP or better still KITCHARI (see recipes: https://www.ayurveda.com/online_resource/kitchari_recipe.html) for three days before a long haul flight.

  • TIP 2: Practice above 3 tips during flight.

  • TIP 3: GET SLICK!

When arriving at destination book a shirodara, abhyanga or body massage with your own sesame oil. Cranial sessions are also suggested.
